CMHDS Promotes Health & Safety to West Coast Logistics Community

CMHDS Expands NAOSH Week Involvement and Becomes NAOSH Week 2010 Supporter – The Canadian Material Handling & Distribution Society (CMHDS) is pleased to announce that it is expanding its emphasis on occupational health and safety through becoming an official NAOSH Week Supporter for the NAOSH Week 2010 campaign. CMHDS has previously supported NAOSH Week (branded in B.C. as ‘Safety and Health Week in B.C.’) and workplace safety through its annual BC Championship Forklift Rally (www.ForkliftRally.com), which is held in conjunction with NAOSH Week. This year will mark the 13th Annual Forklift Rally, with plans actively underway to add a new elite championship for competitors from BC, Washington and Oregon. Some CMHDS member companies, including Versacold and EV Logistics, already actively participate in NAOSH week, and have found it to be extremely valuable in promoting workplace safety in their operations.

Talks Begin On Canada-US Forklift Competition

(Excerpt from Ives Update Newsletter – Fall 2009)

Mark Ribich, John Gilder, Rob Vetter, Al Rainsberger

The Washington State Western Regional Forklift Rodeo took place on Saturday, August 22 in Seattle and this year, there was a special observer in the audience. John Gilder of the Canadian Material Handling & Distribution Society (CMHDS), and no stranger to forklift competitions, was in attendance.

The CMHDS has been the driving force behind the BC Championship Forklift Rally since 1996, the same time that the Washington state forklift rodeos began. “I guess IVES is the common link between both events,” says Rob Vetter of IVES Training Group.

“We have been working with both groups exclusively over the past 5 years providing all testing, judging and course designs. I had mentioned several times to the organizers on both sides of the border over the years how great it would be to get some kind of international, cross border competition going. This year John (Gilder) decided to take the first step in making it happen by meeting with the Washington state crew in person.”

CMHDS Re-Launches “Logistically Speaking”

Over the last few years, we have been sending out announcements on an ad hoc basis to alert members to a host of opportunites, including tours, the Forklift Rally, various partner events, CMHDS golf tournament, and courses, to name some. Needless to say, there were occasional reports of important announcements being missed amid everyone’s flood of inbound Email. Beyond that, it was a lot of work to send out all of those announcements.

With this in mind, and being the logistics professionals that we (say we) are, we sought a way to eliminate this scatter gun approach and better consolidate and present as much of this information as possible to members in a predictable and easy format. So just as one might see consolidation or staging centres to better control just in time delivery of parts and products to your dock, the new newsletter is an attempt to do something similar for the dispatch of CHMDS information to your desktop.
