Sep 19, 2018 – Marijuana Legislation Breakfast Seminar

On Wednesday September 19th, 2018, Dave Earle, President and CEO of the BC Trucking Association presented “Marijuana Legislation – How It Will Affect Your Workplace”.

Dave has an intimate knowledge of substance use, testing and treatment in an employment setting and has been the Co-Chair of the Program Administration Committee for the BC Construction Industry Substance Abuse, Testing and Treatment Program, and was previous Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Construction Industry Rehabilitation Program.

SEMINAR OVERVIEW

This year, Canada will become the second country in the world to legalize marijuana for recreational use. But it’s not new – substance use, including marijuana, has been an issue for employers for generations.

Dave provided a brief history of substance use in Canada, reviewed current case law and technology and contrasted the difference between determining impairment and prohibition testing.

He discussed when employers have to accommodate disability and medical use (and when they don’t) as well as when and how to discipline. Attendees left with an understanding of what this new requirement means for their operations and practical tools to address substance use in their workplaces.
