On Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 CMHDS Members toured the Chalifour Canada Distribution Centre (formerly IRLY Distributors and now the supply chain division of Tim-Br-Mart of Canada)
In addition to the tour, Grant Harris, CMHDS Director, and National Logistics Manager for Chalifour Canada spoke about his company’s procurement, distribution and landed cost strategy and vision for the future of the organization; the subjects of the thesis he wrote recently while completing his MBA from Royal Roads University. Congratulations Grant!
Specifically attendees learned about how Grant and Chalifour Canada tackled the buying practices and related freight issues around a nation-wide purchasing group. The story involves cleaning up receiving, tackling inventory accuracy, working with buyers on understanding regional needs, and maximizing the strengths of employees’ truck loading process and prowess.
Given the independent nature of the Tim-Br-Mart stores, they aren’t required to purchase their goods through Chalifour, which compels the distribution business to offer favorable pricing, assortment and service to drive dealer loyalty. The ultimate goal is to, as Grant says, “entrench the fidelity of the dealer group.”
