CMHDS presents “Brian Devereaux Memorial Scholarship” at BCIT

2016-Award-GalleryOn May 1st, 2015 we lost Brian Devereaux in a tragic motorcycle accident. Brian was a tenured member of the CMHDS, the current Treasurer at the time and former President and Vice-President of the Society.

Since Brian’s passing the Board of Director’s sought a way to honor Brian’s memory and the imprint he left on the Society and the Logistics community. A number of ideas were discussed among the directors and with Brian’s family.

As a result of those discussions we are pleased to announce the CMHDS has established the Brian Devereaux Memorial Scholarship Award in the Operations Management program at BCIT.

Brian Devereaux Memorial Award – An annual award established in 2016 by the Canadian Materials Handling and Distribution Society (CMHDS). The award is in memory of Brian Devereaux, a popular and long-time member of the society. Brian worked at the London Drugs Distribution Centre for more than 40 years and shaped the company significantly during that time. He will be remembered by many for his humor and willingness to freely give of his time to mentor others in the logistics industry.

On Friday June 24, 2016, Drew Church (CMHDS President), Karen Riley (Brian’s Sister – not pictured) and Derek Riley (Brian’s Brother-in-Law) presented Julia Malischewski with the first annual scholarship.

About Julia

Her focus being on Quality Assurance, Continuous Improvement Techniques and Problem Solving Analytics. She has used these skills in various term projects with companies such as Best Buy Canada and Euroline Windows Inc.

At Best Buy she worked at their Western Canada DC on a picking optimization project where one of the deliverables was a math model designed to optimize their sorting labour.

At Euroline Windows Inc, she worked on a throughput optimization project within their assembly line, using tools such as 5S and the Theory of Constraints.

Julia will be continuing onto her Bachelor of Business Administration in Fall 2016.

The CMHDS would like to congratulate Julia and looks forward to continuing to honor Brian’s memory and awarding the scholarship to a deserving student each year.
