On Wednesday November 7th, 2012 CMHDS members toured the GENCO / Home Depot Distribution Facility in Delta, BC. The 420,000 sq.ft. facility located in the Tilbury Industrial Park is the third party (3PL) distributor for the Home Depot stores across Western Canada which average more than 100,000 square feet and stock as many as 40,000 home improvement products, tailored to the communities they serve.
GENCO began in 1898 as H. Shear Trucking Company. Leading his horse and wagon through the streets, Hyman Shear delivered commodities in Pittsburgh and surrounding communities. With the advent of motorized transportation Hyman’s son Sam ushered in the company’s second generation of leadership in the early 1940s. Under a new name, General Commodities Warehouse and Distribution Company (GENCO, for short), Sam expanded the delivery fleet and added warehousing and distribution services.
Today GENCO is North America’s 2nd largest 3PL with almost 10,000 employees and managing over 37 million square feet specializing in Product Lifecycle Management, Distribution & Fulfillment Management, Transportation & Parcel Management and Reverse Logistics.
